Uruguay – Colonia de Sacramento
For my escape with the missus we chose somewhere a bit more sedate (thanks Lastenia for looking after the little buggers again), and took a ferry from BA to Colonia for a two day trip. We stayed in an old hotel (the only kind of hotel there), which was bigger on atmosphere than service. In fact when I tried to get room service the receptionist took me into the kitchen to help myself 🙂 but again I prefer that any day to luxury nonsense.
We spent our time wandering around, eating and watching what we wanted on telly (it’s the little things). Again Colonia is not really a party town and we’re not really party people these days so we were happen to call it an early night.
For someone coming from Europe I think the attractions of Colonia are perhaps less, given that we’ve got loads of old stuff. But for Americans (North and South) I think it is a more attractive proposition.
We did hire a taxi for few hours to take us on a tour of the area and he outdid himself taking us to a farm/restaurant that did killer BBQ AND had the BIGGEST PENCIL IN THE WORLD!!!! We also visited a small vineyard, an old Plaza de Toros and a church with cool nesting birds
Oh, and the Uruguayans were all super friendly…in fact the whole place was so much buena onda I’ve since looked into emigrating there.
